The Golden North Salmon Derby is a fishing event that began in 1947. People from all segments of the community, as well as visitors, participate.
Derby fishers spend the weekend in pursuit of king and coho salmon and the chance to compete for the prizes generously donated by local businesses and individuals. Those who donate their ‘derby’ fish are sold, and revenues are used for scholarships for local students.
The proceeds are managed by the Territorial Sportsmen Scholarship Foundation, which has awarded 337 scholarships totaling nearly $2 million to deserving young people. Four-year scholarships for graduating High School seniors are available, and scholarships for graduate study. Scholarships for vocational training are available as well.
